First things first, congratulations on your new arrival!

And welcome to those blissful days that I often refer to as the newborn blur, when every day is a magical whirlwind of endless cuddles, sleepless nights, and joyful introductions.

I can say from experience that there is absolutely nothing like it. These days pass by in the blink of an eye and before you know it your little bundle will change and grow.

As a newborn photographer (based in Westmeath) it’s my job to capture these precious moments so you can have cherished family photos that capture the raw emotion of your baby’s first precious few weeks on earth.

Photos that provide a lasting record of the love bubble you’re in and the indescribable bond you share.

Photos that will take you back to the magic of those early days for years to come.

Considering a newborn photography session but not sure what to expect? This post will tell you everything you need to know about newborn shoots in my Westmeath studio.

First things first…

When is the best time to book a newborn photography session?

I know you’ve been told that you need to have a newborn session within two weeks of your baby’s arrival. But, breathe a sigh of relief, because in my book that’s not necessary.

Within that first fortnight, you have enough going on. You’re recovering from birth (Well done, mama!), probably existing on little sleep, and soaking up every single second of your new bundle of joy.

It’s totally okay if, in those early weeks, getting photographed is the last thing on your mind.

If capturing that gorgeous newborn scrunch is important to you and you feel comfortable getting your pics in the first two weeks, go for it!

But if you prefer to wait until your baby is a little older, that’s perfectly fine too.

When you get in touch, we can discuss a timeline that feels right for you.

Your comfort is my priority

Welcoming a new baby — whether it’s your first or third, fourth, or fifth — can be a whirlwind.

You’re adjusting to life with a new addition and all the sleepless nights, physical recovery, and overwhelming emotions that entails.

And it’s okay to admit that you might not be feeling your best. That’s where I come in.

I remember those early weeks with a new baby almost as if they were yesterday — it’s what informs my gentle, encouraging, and empathetic approach as a photographer.

I create an environment where everyone feels safe, relaxed, and totally at ease — almost as if you were in your own home. (If you’d prefer to be in your own home, we can arrange that too!)

Each session lasts between two to three hours so you’ll never feel rushed — and you’ll have plenty of time for cuddles and feeding.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a pro at posing either. I won’t ever put you or your little one in uncomfortable poses.

Instead, I’ll offer you lots of gentle support and guidance so you can experience genuine moments of laughter, love and unbridled joy.

My sessions are a prop-free zone

Take a quick scroll through my galleries, and you’ll notice something. I don’t use props like buckets or bean bags in my sessions or place babies in the typical newborn photography poses.

Instead, I capture those tender, emotive, and candid images of your new baby in the place they feel most comfortable and safe, curled up in mum’s chest or dad’s arms.

The only prop you’ll find in my studio? My very special Moses basket — the same one I used 14 years ago when I was expecting my first baby.

When I place your little one in this very sentimental family heirloom, I’m flooded with cherished memories of my own babies — and that allows me to do a beautiful job of capturing yours.

No outfit? No problem

Stressing about what to wear?

Mums often tell me how difficult it is to dress themselves after welcoming a baby. (I’ve been there, I get it!)

They’re often nervous and apprehensive about getting their photos taken because they no longer know what looks good on them.

Inside my client closet, you’ll find a treasure trove of beautiful outfits to help you look and feel your best during a newborn photography session.

(Think elegant, flowing dresses that make you feel your most confident and comfortable. I’m often told they’re stunning!)

My goal is to ensure you look in the mirror before getting your pics taken and feel absolutely beautiful.

Before the session, we’ll discuss your style and preferences, and on the day of the shoot, you’ll get to browse through my carefully curated collection.  (It’s very relaxed, and you’ll have time to try on different outfits too.)

Every item has been handpicked to perfectly complement my photography style and to ensure you can be yourself throughout the shoot.

And there are plenty of super cute cosy knit outfits for your new baby too.

(Don’t worry, every outfit is thoroughly cleaned and steamed, ensuring it’s in perfect condition for your session.)

Every session is baby-led

“But what if my baby won’t settle?” or “What if they sleep through the entire thing?”

These are common concerns I hear from parents before a newborn photography session. Let me put your mind at ease.

Your baby is a baby. I don’t expect them to be anything else. They’ll cry, they’ll sleep… and all of that is okay. I’ll follow your baby’s lead.

And if you have other little ones coming along to the shoot? Please don’t worry about them behaving. I’m a mum of four — and I get it.

In fact, I love the fun, chaotic energy little kids often bring!

Those cheeky, energetic, mischievous moments when they’re excitedly running around, nestling in for a cuddle with their new brother and sister, or climbing all over you, often make for the best shots.

Your gallery reveal

A few weeks after your newborn session, it’s time for the really exciting part: your gallery reveal.

Don’t be afraid to let those happy tears fall during your gallery reveal appointment when you get to see your beautiful images for the first time and pick the images you’ll treasure forever.
